Ever since the Back to the Future films were in the cinemas I've had a fascination with the idea of time travel, and since 2008 I've had this little collection of Cool Methods for Time Travel as I discover them featuring in sci-fi TV series and films. Often they portray time travel in a fun and graphic way, like the Delorian in Back to the Future, but what are other cool methods?

On this page are my suggestions (also included are methods of inter-dimensional travel).

What are yours?

The Discovery in Star Trek:

Certainly not the first star ship from the Star Trek franchise to travel through time, but making use of the so-called mycelium network this time, and later the Red Angel.

The Time Machine:

The time machine in The Time Machine - seen here in The Big Bang Theory. A different version is featured in the film Time After Time which features Mary Steenburgen before she starred in Back to the Future III. Her role in both films is very similar.

The Mail Box:

The mail box in the film The Lake House. Where small items and letters end up 2 years away.

The Mimic - Edge of Tomorrow:

The creature/Mimic in the film Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise. Major William Cage (played by Cruise) finds himself in a time loop that sends him back to the day preceding a battle in which he dies every time.
There is a similar story line in an episode (7) of Star Trek Discovery, called Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad, involving a time loop of 30 minutes.

Looper:

The device in Looper. This film stars Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Emily Blunt (who is also in Edge of Tomorrow).

The Hot Tub:

The hot tub in the film The Hot Tub Time Machine. A group of guys end up back in the 80s. If the 80s wasn't enough, there are also a couple of other references to Back to the Future, not least because one of the characters is played by Crispin Glover, who played George McFly in said film.

Farscape:

John Crichton's space craft (and his knowledge of wormholes) in Farscape.

Terminator:

The "bubble of energy" in Terminator in which travellers arrive naked!
