Because we repair, upgrade, refurbish
and build new computers, we sometimes acquire used/second-hand parts
that still have some life left in them. Instead of just throwing them
out, we do our best to put them to good use or find them new homes.
You will find a variety of used parts
listed along side new one throughout our website in the
Parts & Products
section. Below are some examples of the variety of parts we have
available. Click on the pictures or links to be taken to the relevant

CRT Monitors are a huge problem when it comes to
disposing of them, so if they still work we continue to use
them, or sell them on. |

RAM is tested to ensure it is fault-free. Most of the RAM
that we stock is that which has been used. Other RAM is ordered
upon request. |

Hard Drives
are fully wiped (all the previous owner's data is removed and
destroyed) and are scanned to ensure they are free from damaged
sectors. |

PSUs are tested and confirmed to be working and fans are replaced if
they have become noisy. We also have both standard and Micro ATX
models. |

Laptops have their hard drives wiped and the operating
system reinstalled. |

We have a variety of refurbished
computers that we run SETI@home on while they await buyers and new
homes. These
systems are professionally refurbished, they have been completely wiped and
re-installed to ensure they are glitch and virus-free. As well as
re-installing the operating system, all of the latest Windows updates
are also installed - a service you rarely get when you buy a new
computer (unless you buy from us!).
All second-hand systems and
individual parts include a 6 month RTB warranty.

OUR PHILOSOPHY |
|
Because new computer
parts are manufactured so cheaply abroad, this leads to
short-term savings for consumers. However, this leads to old
parts being thrown away, often before they need to be. This is
causing a long-term problem for our society and the environment.
While old equipment
will inevitably fail over time, many parts will remain
fault-free for years to come, if not a decade or more.
Unlike cars (and
people!), the hardware that makes up computers doesn't slow down
with age. It is often the software that is installed on them that
becomes more demanding or becomes bogged down over time.
New operating systems require more RAM, faster processors and
higher capacity hard drives to provide us with more of the
features that we have come to expect. Microsoft's Windows 98
would comfortably run on a 500MHz processor and with 256MB of
RAM, but now in 2010 the
Windows 7 systems we sell have dual core processors that run
at about 2GHz and 2GB (2048MB) of RAM minimum.
We often get asked
by those looking to buy a new computer 'but do I need all that
performance, I only want to browse the web and check my e-mail?'
The answer is yes, if you want a new computer you do. However, a
refurbished computer running an older operating system and
software, while it will not have or support newer features, is
often adequate for many people.
