Adding more RAM to a
computer is a popular way of speeding it up - if there is not enough
room in the RAM to load the operating system and applications you use,
that's when things slow down.
RAM is used as you use your
computer (don't mistake it for the Hard Drive where the Operating
System and all your files are stored). When you switch your computer
on, Windows and any programs you are using are loaded into RAM from
the Hard Drive, if there isn't enough RAM then some data is swapped
back to the Hard Drive (you will see the Hard Drive light flashing
when this happens). Your computer will slow down when this swapping
happens because the Hard Drive isn't accessed as quickly as the RAM.
This excessive swapping of data will add to the wear and tear of a
Hard Disk Drive which is essentially a mechanical device with moving
parts inside, whereas RAM consists of computer chips. |
