Since 1999 I have participated in SETI@home, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence and I have a handful of computers dedicated to the cause, although I only have them all running at once during the winter months. I'm currently in the Top 10 in the UK, based on Total Credit, and I'm a member of team GPUUG.

I also use my computers for everything else, such as work, visiting Second Life, editing and watching videos online, and occasionally listening to and making music. I use a mix of both Windows and Linux.

On these pages there are some other random topics from the past that may still be of interest to others.

SETI@homeSETI@home - December 2019:

In December I was keeping my RAC (Recent Average Credit) score high but then my internet connection broke.

SETI@home - August - September 2019:

I took part in this year's SETI Wow Event; two weeks of crunching to honour the discovery of the Wow! Signal on August 15th, 1977, which was received from the direction of constellation Sagittarius. This year's event also allowed me to not only slow the progress of the person in 11th who is fast on my heels in the UK standings but gain a place before November when I will switch my computers on proper for the winter months, thereby retaining 10th place.

I made it up into 9th place in the UK standings in September, but slipped back to 10th shortly after:

Table Borders; from FrontPage to Firefox: July 2019

I still use MS FrontPage for creating web pages and ever since I switched over to Firefox from Internet Explorer all those moons ago, I’ve had an issue with table borders, or rather, Firefox has an issue with them.

It’s all down to how each browser interprets the code.

Software I Use:
I use a mix of both Ubuntu Linux (16/18) and Windows systems (XP, Vista, 7 and 10), but most of my experience is with Windows. It is only in recent years that I have switched more to Ubuntu and for this reason I like software that works on both. Here is a list of some of what I use.

  Windows Ubuntu
Web design
Old-school I know, but Microsoft FrontPage 2002 works for me.
BlueGriffon
FTP AceFTP
(CuteFTP works also)
FileZilla
Web Browser

Firefox
Used with AdBlock, DF YouTube and Stark VPN (read more here)

Office Software

LibreOffice Writer/Calc
I preferred the style of OpenOffice (such as the menu icons), but because LibreOffice is bundled with Ubuntu I switched to that.

Image Editing Jasc PaintShop Pro
An old version that I can't escape from. I have tried GIMP but really struggle with it.

Image Composite Editor (ICE) for creating panoramas.

(GIMP, if I have to)
Video Editing

DaVinci Resolve

Audio Editing

Audacity

Music Player Old school
WinAmp
-
Video Player

VLC Media Player

E-book Reader / Manager

 Calibre

Organising
Notion

(Notion Firefox app)

What are your software preferences?

SETI@homeSETI@home - July 2019:

Just a quick SETI update while everything is powered down for the summer months... I've lost a place this month; now back in 10th in the UK standings, but looking forward to regaining that after I start crunching again in October. I shouldn't lose any more places before then.

Earth Hour 2019: March 30th:

I’ve been taking part in Earth Hour (and Earth Day) for most years now. The general idea is to stop using electricity for the hour. This can seem simple at first but once you start gearing up for it you realise just what things use and require electricity; lights, fridges, internet things, phones, watches, clocks… How this effects us will depend on our evening routines. How we can take part will typically depend on the people we live with.

Read more on on my previous year's blog post.

For the event this year I turn off all of my computers and spend the hour away from technology; almost. I have a book to read on my eBook reader.

SETI@homeSETI@home - March 2019:

Overtaken in the UK standings; I now drop back to 9th before I power down through the summer months until October.

Total Credit topped 145,000,000.

In looking ahead, it seems that my next target (currently in 7th) is some 20 million credits away and doing the maths indicates that it will be hit-and-miss as to whether I can achieve that in my October 2019 to March 2020 stint. The only way to mitigate this will be to closely trail that target until then. I’m not sure I can justify the electricity usage for that.

SETI@homeSETI@home - February 2019:

February has seen me climb to 8th place in the UK for my SETI@home efforts, but expecting to be overtaken by the person who is down in 11th and climbing the rankings fast.

Computers working faultlessly but I’ve dialled back my efforts a little this month to keep my electricity usage in check.

SETI@homeSETI@home - January 2019:

I have now taken 9th place in the UK after finally overtaking someone who is no longer participating.

I expect to climb into 8th place next month (February), but I will only hold that place for a while since the person down in 13th place has a Average credit score more than three-times greater than my own that sits around 100K and is set to overtake me.
